Living Single by Kaize Adams, Ph.D.

Young Brotha

A new season is here. Springtime is here. The trees are budding and the birds are singing. Outside is warming up and pollen is everywhere. Springtime is a time of Easter celebrations, proms, and graduations, and, last but not least, weddings. One day I plan to take that step into matrimony. Marriage is a beautiful union with many benefits, and I commend and congratulate all those who are married and are soon to be married. Until that time comes for me, I am content with being single and enjoying its benefits.

Back in the day, there was a television show called “Living Single.” The show centered on the lives of six friends who shared personal and professional experiences while living in a Brooklyn brownstone. As hilarious as the show was, it related to so many single people then and now. The characters in that show were all completely different individuals and enjoyed living single.

At this moment in my life, I can honestly say that I am ‘cool’ with being single. There is so much that I want to do and accomplish and I’m excited about the present and the future wherever they may lead. I’m sure other single people share my sentiment.

Paul stated in 1 Corinthians 7:32-34 (NIV), “I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs – now he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world – how he can please his wife – and his interests are divided.”

As a single man, devotion to God is a must. Just like any relationship, I have to stay in constant communication with God. He is with me at all times. I know if I seek God first in my life all other areas of my life will align. Whatever path life takes me, I know God has it under control, and my devotion to him is imperative for balance and positive growth.

Being single definitely has its benefits. I can devote a lot of time to my ministry and other personal interests. Right now, I do not have to be concerned with the responsibilities of marriage. Being the best me I can be is my focus. Being the best son, brother, cousin, nephew, friend, and all other titles that have been bestowed upon me is what I strive to be.

I reflect on the many phenomenal people in the Bible who were single. Jesus Christ, as we all know, was single. There was also Miriam (Moses’ eldest sister), Elijah; Elisha; Jeremiah; Daniel; The three Hebrew boys (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego); John the Baptist; The Apostle John: Timothy, and Lydia to name a few. All of the people mentioned were used mightily by God in the building of his kingdom and were devoted to God and their call and purpose.

If you are living single, God can use you just the same and even to a greater level. Nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37). I encourage you to do the following: 1) Seek God for wisdom and guidance. 2) Keep a positive attitude. 3) Be the best you that you can be. 4) Seize this moment and season in your life and cherish it. 5) Explore the limitless possibilities that you are afforded. 6) Continue to share love, joy, compassion, and happiness to all those you come into contact with.

As a single person in the body Christ you have more power than you think. Remember that there is so much power in one. It only takes one person to impact the home, community, and ultimately the world. As you walk with God daily, let him direct your paths and you will make a tremendous positive impact wherever you go and in whatever you do.
